Publication of Bourton Way, Wellingborough and Station Road, Higham Ferrers
The newest addition to the Albion Archaeology Monograph is now completed and ready to read!
This report presents the results of Albion Archaeology’s investigations of two middle Iron Age settlements, undertaken in advance of new housing developments by David Wilson Homes (South Midlands) at Bourton Way, Wellingborough and Station Road, Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire.
The two sites are c.9km apart and it was felt appropriate to publish them together because of their similar topographical locations overlooking the River Nene. In each case the Albion excavation areas were situated within larger settlements that had previously been partially investigated. Joint publication, therefore, provides an opportunity to take a comparative overview of the whole of both settlements.
Situated on higher ground close to the River Nene, both settlements were in prime topographic locations for a mixed farming economy, dominated by the husbandry of sheep/goat and cattle, and the growing of spelt wheat and hulled barley. As is often the case on sites of this period, meagre evidence for non-agricultural activities, such as textile-, bone-and antler-working was recovered. This publication includes two reconstruction drawings by Cecily Marshall: one for each of the settlements. These are based as far as possible on the archaeological evidence recovered from the Albion and adjacent investigations.
